About Dachshunds It goes without saying that an aficionado of any breed believes their breed is “the best”. That is what makes the sport associated with purebred dogs endlessly fascinating for those of us who have become involved in the ‘dog fancy’. For ordinary folk who remain outside the dog world…we all sound a bit like we likely need to “get a life”. Whatever, We are passionately involved in breeding, raising and showing what we believe to be outstanding examples of our chosen breeds and, well, there’s no life like it! (with apologies to the Armed Forces) Dachshunds are best suited to people who appreciate the joys of having a constant companion everywhere they go (and we mean everywhere), providing assistance with the most mundane of daily chores such as tying one’s shoes, picking up anything fallen to the floor (socks and underwear tend to be favourites) and any other task that occurs within their purview. Once they feel that their work is done, they transition to standby mode (usually on the couch or some other comfortable spot - preferably sunny, thanks) but are ready at a moment’s notice if you need them! They are incredibly smart, comical, intuitive, mischievous, naughty on occasion and endearing all at the same time. They are absolutely devoted to their families and generally have little or no interest in others. They make exceptionally good watch dogs with a strong sense of their territory. Trespassers receive the full display of their vocal abilities – for reasonably small dogs, they have big barks! Some describe the Standard Wirehair as a large dog cleverly disguised in a smaller dog’s body. The Canadian Kennel Club Breed Standard describes the Dachshund as follow: Low to the ground, short-legged, long bodied, but with compact figure and robust muscular development, with bold and confident carriage of the head and intelligent facial expression; conformation pre-eminently fitted for following game into burrows. In spite of his shortness of leg, in comparison with his length of trunk, he should appear neither crippled, awkward, cramped in his capacity for movement nor slim and weasel-like. (No kidding!!) Added to this, his hunting spirit, good nose, loud tongue and small size render him especially suited for beating the bush. His figure and his fine nose give him an especial advantage over most other breeds of sporting dogs for trailing. He should be clever, lively and courageous to the point of rashness, persevering in his work above and below ground, with all the senses being well developed. Our Dachshunds are all wild boar in colour and range from approximately 22 to 30 pounds in size. They love to go hiking, swimming, digging in the backyard, and virtually any activity out of doors. All of our dogs are raw fed – a choice we made after much research and study of canine nutrition. The food we feed Urban Carnivore [link: www.urbancarnivore.com] is a “whole prey” diet. We find that this food has been the best choice to keep our dogs slim and fit and incredibly healthy, with great vitality, beautiful, shiny coats, no doggy odour and clean ears, eyes and teeth. |
